The Bank of Portugal offers good practices for its bank customers who may acquire financial products and services through the Internet. In its National Financial Training Plan TODOS CONTAM” (Everyone Counts) ” it defines a set of general and common security precautions to be adopted when carrying out transactions.

Precautions to take to protect personal data:
  • Protect personal data and documents, disclosing them only in strictly necessary cases provided for by law.
  • Protect e-mail boxes containing personal information.
Precautions to take to prevent computer fraud:
  • Protect the computer with anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes and always keep the firewall active;
  • Do not open e-mails with suspicious content;
  • Do not divulge personal data or complete access codes through the Internet, e-mail, or telephone;
  • Write the web page address instead of clicking on links when you want to visit the Internet pages of credit institutions.
Precautions to take with regard to financial operations in unauthorised activity:
  • The lists of entities authorised to carry out financial activities can be found on the websites of financial supervisors.
  • To prevent fraud, do not reply to suspicious contacts or contacts from unknown sources. It is important to ask for all the information deemed necessary in each situation and to be cautious in the use of personal data, bank account, and means of payment.
